Benin women protest over murder of pregnant housewife by husband

A group of women under the aegis of Concerned Market Women staged a peaceful protest in Benin City on Monday, condemning the killing of 38-year-old housewife Success Izekor by her husband, Kelvin Izekor.

DAILY POST reports that Success, who was four months pregnant, was allegedly stabbed to death by her husband at their home on No. 50, Upper Mission Road, Benin City, on Saturday, 22nd February 2025.

The protesters, carrying placards with various inscriptions, decried the increasing cases of domestic violence against women.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Odion Asemota appealed to the government to ensure justice for the deceased.

According to her, although Success’s husband is currently facing trial, his mother is allegedly boasting that he will be freed on the grounds of mental illness.

“This was a man who married Success in June last year, and just eight months later, he stabbed her to death while she was four months pregnant.

“After killing her on Saturday night, he went to her store on Sunday and took the money she used for her Point of Sale (POS) business.

“He even attempted to secretly dispose of her body on Sunday, but neighbours caught him,” she alleged.

DAILY POST recalls that the Edo State Police Command confirmed the murder in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu.

Yamu stated that the police received information that one Kelvin Izekor had killed his wife, Success Izekor, and was about to be lynched by an irate mob.

“Operatives of the Aduwawa Division swiftly responded to the report and found the lifeless body of the woman lying in a pool of her own blood with deep cuts on her head.

“It took serious efforts by the police operatives to pacify the mob, rescue the suspect, and take him into custody for investigation.

“The victim was removed and rushed to the hospital, where she was confirmed dead,” he said.

Yamu further quoted the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Betty Enekpen Isokpan Otimenyin, as condemning the rise in domestic violence.

The commissioner assured the public of a thorough investigation and vowed that anyone found culpable would face the full wrath of the law.
