Kano govt establishes commission to fight market exploitation, price hikes

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the composition of the Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KSCPC) to safeguard consumers against unfair trade practices and market exploitation.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, said the council comprises professionals, government officials, and business representatives, tasked with ensuring fair trade practices and protecting consumers from substandard products.

“The council’s primary mandate is to protect consumer rights and ensure businesses operate under fair, transparent, and lawful conditions,” the statement read.

“This initiative aligns with the administration’s commitment to promoting good governance, market confidence, and shielding the public from unethical business practices.”

The newly appointed members of the council include Dr. Umar Garba Haruna as chairman and Alhaji Zangina Jafaru as the executive secretary. Other key members are Hon. Ibrahim Ahmad Gama, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Bichi, Alhaji Hussaini Bello Gidado, Alhaji Munzali Abubakar.

Others include; Ali Muhammad Adakawa, Alhaji Ahmed Isah Chedi, Sani Gambo, Barr. Halima Yahuza Ahmad, Prof. Salisu Ibrahim Ahmad, Aminu Gidado Yushe’u, Bashir Shehu Gezawa, Maryam Halilu Haruna, Bashir Uba, Engr. Faisal Mahmud, Umar Zubairu, and Barr. Shamsu Jibrin.

Governor Yusuf emphasized that the council would immediately begin operations to address consumer complaints, regulate trade practices, and create a business environment that prioritizes transparency and accountability.
