Niger LG poll: Gov Bago reiterates ceding vice-chairmanship to women

Niger Govt denies attacks by gunmen on Gov Bago’s convoy

Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring that all 25 vice-chairmanship positions in the forthcoming local government elections will be occupied by women.

Bago, who has consistently championed gender inclusivity, made this known in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Print Media, Aisha Wakaso. He stated that women have been relegated to the background for far too long, despite their immense contributions to society.

He emphasised that women are pivotal to the growth and development of the country and possess the capacity to drive meaningful progress and transformation.

The governor stressed that, in line with this, his administration remains committed to breaking barriers for women in leadership and ensuring they take their rightful place in decision-making processes, particularly on issues that directly affect them.

“Women have the capacity and should be given a chance. When included in governance, they bring balance, innovation, and a unique perspective that is crucial for development.

“Empowering women at the local government level is not just a matter of fairness but a strategic move to foster sustainable development across the state and the country,” he maintained.

Bago then urged stakeholders of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, across the state to support this initiative, saying, “It aligns with best practices for inclusive governance and sustainable development.”
