The Ucha-Sub Clan of Ukum, a subgroup of the Tiv people in Taraba State, has passed a vote of no confidence in the President of the Tiv Cultural and Social Association, TCSA, Chief James Chihi Baka.

In a statement issued to journalists on Friday in Jalingo, they called for his immediate removal and replacement with Mr. Joseph Tsavlaha.

Signed by Baba Kyamande, Elder Emberga, and Elder Orbuter Mom, the group cited multiple grievances against Baka, including his inability to handle disputes over the selection of Queen (Kumashe) at both state and local government levels, which led to legal battles and internal conflict.

He was also accused of disregarding court orders, thereby tarnishing the image of the Tiv people as law-abiding citizens.

Additionally, Baka, according to the statement, allegedly violated traditional practices by appointing 24 out of 27 members of the TCSA Elders Statesmen Committee from the Ipusu faction, upsetting the customary balance of representation.

“At a meeting held on 15 March 2025, the Ucha-Sub Clan unanimously resolved to recall Chief James Chihi Baka as the President General of TCSA. Consequently, Mr. Joseph Tsavlaha has been selected as his replacement,” the statement read.

Other allegations included his failure to resolve chieftaincy disputes in Wukari and Ibi local government councils, as well as his role in exacerbating leadership conflicts between various Tiv factions in Donga, Gashaka, and Wukari councils.

The statement warned that opposing Baka’s removal was tantamount to undermining the peace efforts of Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas and the collective progress of the Tiv people.
